On the road that connects Ierapetra with Sitia, across the bay of the small harbor of Makrigialos, come to have a unique experience in the old dependencies of the peasants that have been transformed into cozy traditional houses and operate exclusively with alternative forms of energy, for a stay outside time in the beautiful area of Aspros Potamos.

Built on the hillside in an evergreen, lush environment of incomparable beauty, the ten houses offer a spectacular view to the mountain and the canyon of Pefka. The settlement, with a history of 300 years, has been restored with great care and attention - the last renovation took place in 2011. The houses are built of natural stone in the color of ocher, with thick, stone walls that make it cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

The houses have no electricity and the photovoltaic system that has been installed in the hotel has won the first European prize for Greece, allowing hot water, the use of the refrigerator and the lighting inside the house and the garden.

The premises of each house are different and unique, sometimes there are rocks in the walls and sometimes there are mezzanine lofts. The lighting is supplemented with paraffin lamps and candles giving the space a very warm atmosphere. In the houses there are no sockets but adapters can be found at the reception, which can be used on the site to recharge your electrical devices.

Upon request (on the previous day), the traditional Cretan breakfast is served at little tables in the garden and is made of fresh local produce.

We really enjoyed our stay at Aspros Potamos. Wonderful appartments, lovely place, nice staff. No complaints I could think of.

On y retournera !

Jean-Marc J. / France / August, 2012
